FAQ

Common Questions

Is there a free trial?

Yes — both BookCatalyst and ResearchCatalyst include a 14-day free trial with all features unlocked. No credit card or account required.

Is it a subscription?

No. Both products are one-time purchases. Pay once, own forever. We believe subscriptions for writing and research tools are unnecessary.

Where is my data stored?

On your computer. Both apps are local-first — your files stay on your machine. BookCatalyst stores projects as Markdown files. ResearchCatalyst stores annotations in JSON sidecar files next to your PDFs. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

What Windows versions are supported?

Windows 10 (version 1809 and later) and Windows 11. Both x64 and ARM64 architectures are supported, including Surface Pro devices.

Does ResearchCatalyst work with any PDF?

Yes — it renders any valid PDF. Text extraction for highlights works best with text-based PDFs (not scanned images). Scanned PDFs can still be highlighted and annotated, but the extracted text will be limited.

Can I use ResearchCatalyst without a pen?

Absolutely. While it's optimised for pen input on tablets, the highlighting tools work with mouse and touch as well. The radial menu and Research Panel work great with keyboard and mouse.

What if I have a problem?
