No. Both products are one-time purchases. Pay once, own forever. We believe subscriptions for writing and research tools are unnecessary.
On your computer. Both apps are local-first — your files stay on your machine. BookCatalyst stores projects as Markdown files. ResearchCatalyst stores annotations in JSON sidecar files next to your PDFs. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
Windows 10 (version 1809 and later) and Windows 11. Both x64 and ARM64 architectures are supported, including Surface Pro devices.
Yes — it renders any valid PDF. Text extraction for highlights works best with text-based PDFs (not scanned images). Scanned PDFs can still be highlighted and annotated, but the extracted text will be limited.
Absolutely. While it's optimised for pen input on tablets, the highlighting tools work with mouse and touch as well. The radial menu and Research Panel work great with keyboard and mouse.
